A Loner's Three F's To Shopping For Swimwear

You're reading this page because you're either a loner since birth or because you're forced into this temporary status. There are indeed times when your boyfriend (BF) or best friend forever (BFF) isn't available to help you shop for a swimwear. With no extra pair of critical eyes and a mouth that fires suggestions to match, you may find yourself in a less confident position about the item you're about to purchase. The good news is that in your solitary moments or under the direst I'm-a-loner-today circumstances, you can still be a great shopper.

Check out the following things you yourself must spot in that swimwear you're supposed to fit in a few hours or a few days from now.

• Check out the fabric. While you may be a complete greenhorn in distinguishing nylon from lycra, feel the material with your hands, read the tagged description that goes with the item and ask your saleslady the right questions. You're looking for swimwear that is light yet durable, extremely stretchable and elastic, and quick-drying. Don't just depend on your instincts though; inquire if the swimwear is manufactured to give you added UV protection as in most athletic swimwear, chlorine resistant that minimizes fabric wear and tear, and with color-fast technology which preserves the original color of the swimwear and minimizes fading.

• Check out the fit. What looks good on display may not fit you well. Prepare to visit the dressing room to try out the swimwear of your choice. You're looking for swimwear that comfortably hugs your body in all the right places. Although all swimwear are elastic, not all can fit the petite frames or can stretch enough for the plus sizes. The neck lines, arm openings and leg openings must neither squeeze you, flatten your bust and dig into your skin. Nor should it allow air (and later on, water) to pass through. Rotate your arms and legs to check if the straps won't fall off, or cause you any discomfort or pain. Don't forget to inspect the area that hugs your private part; you don't want to solicit any unwanted attention on that camel's toe you're unconsciously flaunting.

• Check out the form. Prior to your visit, do some online research or some magazine flipping on what style best complements your body shape. If you're shopping spree is impromptu and you really don't have time to waste on research, take note of your BF or BFF's honest critique and jesting allusions to your body, and take the lead from there. If your BF fondly calls you “Tubby,” you might want to check out swimwear that hides your belly. If your BFF fondly calls you “Busty,” you know you should downplay your busts and select darker swimwear with details and trimmings that ward attention away from your rich asset. When you're through, you can select the colors and prints that suit your fancy. As a precaution, purchase an overskirt or a cover-up if you're unsure of your choice.

Keeping the three Fs in mind which are fabric, fit and form, you're now ready to embark on that solo shopping spree for the perfect swimwear.
